Butterfly Wings and Insecurities

I’ve recently discovered this quote: “Butterflies cannot see their own wings. They’ll never understand how beautiful they are. People are like that as well.” - unknown. This quote resonated well with me because, as a high schooler, I notice that overwhelming expectation to be great that many teenagers and young adults face. Many of us seem to want so much better for ourselves, whether it’s mental stability, physical appearance, or all of that combined. Sometimes, as humans, we can become bombarded by the voice inside our heads saying that we are not enough, but in reality, there are people out there who admire the things we do and the challenges we conquer. We are the butterflies.

Butterflies are beautiful creatures, from their colors to their symbolism and transformations. The quote from before may not be scientifically accurate, hence the fact that butterflies actually can see their own wings due to their 360-degree field vision. But, indeed, their vision isn’t a clear image, and they don’t see their patterns as detailed or as intricate as we do. Which still makes this quote stand even truer in a way. Many people see these astonishing creatures and fully acknowledge how majestic they are, but somehow cannot find the self-love in order to see it inside themselves. So, I raise this question to think about: Are our wings damaged, or is our vision just blurry?
